I know that I'm a little to the A229 Pro party and some people even got the new VS1 but here I am.
I had the A229 Pro for a few weeks and was able to capture footage in different conditions. I also have the A229 Duo that has been running flawlessly for over 1 ½ years and nearly 80.000 kilometers.
Since there are already several posts about the unboxing and what is included, I'm gonna skip this.
What I really like compared to the A229 is the new menu. It's much more modern and it makes the camera feel much newer. It's very easy and intuitive to use. Between Viofo and Vantrue the menu isn't much different now.
While opening the box I noticed a piece of paper with instructions on where to plug the cables. This seems suspiciously similar to Vantrue. It's a nice little detail.
The installation is easy but the small coax cables from the A229 Duo were a bit easier to hide in my case.
The Video quality from the front camera is similarly good as the A139 Pro or other 4k Starvis 2 cameras.
Many plates are visible at night, some are not. This of course varies with the angle of the plate, headlights, and other factors.
I will attach some screenshots from several hours of footage.
Compared to the A229 Duo, the audio quality is equally good in my opinion. Nothing to complain about and it picks up voice and other noises without any issues.
The new voice control is very responsive and works fine. I didn't get even one false detection. Nice work Viofo!
I wish there was a small piece of paper with the commands included in the package, similar to the cable instructions.
Interestingly the SD card doesn't get very hot. After recording it's not uncomfortable to touch. Seems like the heatsink is doing good work to keep the temperatures low. It will be interesting to see how it will handle heat in the summer. We currently have outside temps from 1°C to 10°C here in Germany. This of course shouldn't cause any issues.
I tried different SD cards. The 256GB Viofo and 2 different types of Samsung Evo Select 256GB (the blue one with white letters and the older, green-white one). All 3 SD cards were accepted without any errors.
With the G sensor set on the default settings, I didn't get any falsely saved footage. Even with a car with a very sporty suspension.
The GPS requires about 30 seconds to find the initial location for me. After it locks on and when driving through a tunnel it takes about 3-6 seconds to lock on again. As mentioned in my other post, the GPS mount now has LEDs showing the status of the GPS mount.
Since the new app update the recording doesn't need to be stopped manually, the app now does this automatically. Downloading videos is very fast with the 5GHZ connection.
I will now post some screenshots in various conditions from the front and rear camera. (Some parts of the visible plates are blurred to comply with strict German privacy laws)
From my observations, the best readability of plates at night is achieved with HDR enabled. But even at day, I feel like I get way better results with HDR enabled. If HDR is displayed, the plates are blurry to the point they can't be read.
This might have something to do with our weather the past few weeks. Other daytime screenshots I saw here were very good. The sun doesn't come out here currently and it's unfortunately most of the time cloudy.
I will add some more screenshots when the weather gets better.
